This extra-large hide of natural oil cordovan comes directly from Shinki Hikaku, the premier Japanese tannery famous worldwide for its horsehide processing. Known as "megane cordovan" because it remains in one uncut piece resembling a pair of eyeglasses, this single piece connects two full shell lobes without a center seam, a genuinely rare find.
Cordovan is often called the diamond of leather for its glossy sheen, strength, and supple hand. A connected hide of this size is a rare treat, giving leatherworkers an expansive, uninterrupted layout perfect for larger custom creations that demand high-end material.
This piece is brand new and unused, in a natural colorway that will develop a rich patina with use over time. It has a standard firmness, a thickness of roughly 1.5mm to 1.8mm, and measures about 55 square decimeters: a generous canvas of authentic Japanese leather craftsmanship.
