The original Rubber Bass was born in 1993, when Maywa Denki staged its first live show using only electric percussion and a guitar-like instrument called the "Guitarra." Without any low end, the ensemble felt incomplete, but traditional bass instruments were far too bulky to fit the act. The company's chairman solved the problem by building a bass out of rubber, shrinking the instrument down to a fraction of its usual size.
This compact model carries that idea further. Its pickup mechanism borrows an idea from the "sawari" buzzing device found on the traditional shamisen, producing a pleasantly gritty distortion built right into the instrument itself.
Power comes from two AAA batteries (not included), and connecting cables are sold separately. Brand new, this is a piece of Maywa Denki's playful engineering, ready to bring a compact rumble to your desk.
