Shantou embroidery traces back to the early 18th century, when Italian missionaries brought European needlecraft techniques to the port city of Shantou, on the southern coast of mainland China. Local artisans blended these methods with traditional Chinese motifs like phoenixes and dragons, giving rise to one of China's three major embroidery traditions.

The skill was passed down from mother to daughter for more than two hundred years. Girls learned to hold a needle almost as soon as they could hold anything at all, working simple stitches by age five and joining the family trade by their teens. Using only a bamboo or rattan frame, needle, thread, and scissors, embroiderers mastered over one hundred distinct stitching techniques, working with remarkable speed and precision to complete even the most intricate designs by hand.
