The TOWNS ODE is a dedicated CD-ROM drive emulator built to replace aging, failure-prone mechanical drives in Fujitsu FM TOWNS systems. Released in Japan across the late 1980s and 1990s, the FM TOWNS series holds a legendary place in PC history as an early pioneer of CD-ROM multimedia and classic arcade ports. Swapping out the original laser pickup for this modern hardware keeps these iconic machines running smoothly for years to come.
This emulator runs at standard single speed during normal use, but matches double speed performance when a white TOWNS model is switched into its high speed mode. It's verified to work on vertical CX units and is likely compatible with 20F models as well. A buyer has also confirmed successful use on the 2F, though note that the included connection cable runs about 10cm short for that model; a version with a 30cm cable for 2F units is planned for a later release, at a slightly higher price. Monitor-integrated models such as the UX, UG, and UR are not supported.
If you own an ME, MF, EA, or any model in the Fresh series, check your system's drive tray shape against the product images before ordering. Choosing the wrong version means the hardware won't fit physically inside the case; this is especially important for ME machines, since drive sizes can vary even within that line.
Overseas buyers should also note that some forwarding services, particularly Buyee and Tenso, have been known to restrict shipment of circuit boards like this one. If you run into that issue, the forwarding service Blackship has reportedly had fewer problems with this kind of item. Alternatively, contact the seller before purchasing to arrange direct international shipping via EMS.
TOWNS ODE is a CD-ROM drive emulator designed to replace the original CD-ROM drive in an FM TOWNS computer. It normally operates at approximately single-speed, or approximately double-speed in High-Speed Mode on white FM TOWNS models.
For ME, MF, Fresh, Fresh TV, EA, Fresh E, Fresh T, Fresh ES, Fresh ET, Fresh FS, and Fresh FT models, confirm the CD drive tray shape and select the compatible version shown in product images 2 and 3. An incompatible version will not physically fit. ME systems may use drives of different sizes.
Vertical FM TOWNS compatibility has been confirmed only with the CX. It may also work with the 20F. Operation has been reported on the 2F, but its connection cable is approximately 10 cm too short. Not compatible with monitor-integrated UX, UG, or UR models.
