A traditional ceramic kame pot brings centuries of Japanese craftsmanship into your daily routine. It's handcrafted by Mr. Kato, a 13th-generation artisan working at a kiln in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, with roots going back to 1600. Every crock is made entirely without machinery: pouring the clay into the mold, releasing it, shaping it, all done by hand. That process gives each piece its own subtle glaze variation and unique texture, so no two are exactly alike.
This 2-go sized crock holds 360 milliliters and stands about 10 centimeters tall with its lid on, 11 centimeters wide. Because ceramic resists degrading from salt or acid, it's well suited to storing salted plums (about 15 fit inside), pickles, salt (roughly 150 to 200 grams), seasonings, tea leaves, or butter (half of a standard 150-gram block sits neatly in it). The lid has an easy-to-grip top that opens and closes with one hand, so the pot moves easily from kitchen counter to refrigerator to dining table. Note that it isn't airtight; if odor transfer is a concern, cover the contents with plastic wrap before sealing.
Wash gently with a soft sponge or natural-fiber brush and neutral detergent before first use, and handle with care: as a solid ceramic piece, it has some weight to it, more once filled, so use it on a stable surface.
The pottery studio has officially ended production of these kame pots, and only the remaining white ceramic stock is available, with no future re-releases planned. It's a wonderful opportunity to bring a piece of authentic, functional Japanese craft history into your home.
