Meet "Haru no Yo" (Spring Night), a provisional name given to this rare 0.25-gram piece of green oil Kyara, one of the most prized classifications of agarwood in the traditional Japanese art of incense. When gently warmed at around 110 degrees Celsius, it opens with a bold, expanding bitterness characteristic of fine green oil Kyara. Within three to four minutes, a rich sweetness rises to balance that initial bitterness, settling into the graceful, classic scent long associated with the finest incense woods. The poetic name draws on a spring night waka poem by Fujiwara no Teika, included in the Shin Kokin Wakashu anthology.
The wood is cut into thin strips, roughly 1mm thick and 3mm to 8mm wide along the short edge, with the grain running along the length. This makes it easy to split smaller pieces by hand or with a utility knife when preparing it for heating. Each piece arrives wrapped in a traditional folded paper pouch sized to fit the wood, a fitting way to hold a small, fragrant piece of Japan's centuries-old incense tradition.
