This collection reproduces the exact fragrant woods used in the incense house's May 2022 Monkokai gathering, a relaxed study session where participants simply savor and compare scents, free of the scoring games and formal gestures of classical kodo.
Inside you will find six distinct woods, two pieces each, for a total of twelve prepared pieces ready for your own listening session: Yukima no Kusa, Harufukikaze, Naji no Fune, Kamijiyama, Akebono no Sora, and Furuki Kozue. Five are drawn from Rakoku, one of the revered categories within the classic Rokkoku classification system; Naji no Fune stands apart as a piece of Kyara, offering a striking contrast to compare alongside the others.
Because these woods are meant for personal enjoyment rather than formal incense games, they are left in their natural shapes instead of being cut into uniform squares. The set arrives in a traditional tatamigami paper wrapper measuring 192mm by 160mm by 23mm, a fitting introduction to Japan's quiet, contemplative world of fragrance.
